Proactive Tips for Immune System Health

proactive-tips-for-immune-system-health

Along with the COVID-19 pandemic
comes a tsunami of confusing and conflicting opinions and information about
immune system health and how to best protect and care for ourselves. I am not
an infectious disease expert. So telling you my opinion about whether I think
wearing a mask or not, how I feel about social distancing and self isolation,
or any other point of view related to disease control, would be not only
inappropriate and out of my scope of practice– but would also just add more
confusing opinions to the mix. This doesn’t really help
anyone.

So instead, I’ve prepared this article to help you better
understand what the data suggests (so far) as it pertains to what you
actually have control over in the face of this pandemic–  part of that
is your body’s own ability to thrive and defend
itself! Read More

Inflammatory Foods 101- What You Need to Know

There is a lot of information on
the internet about inflammation,  inflammatory foods, and how to eat
that sometimes contradict each other. So, I thought I would put together some
basic information on what it even means to be an inflammatory food, what
foods are considered more inflammatory, and how you can protect yourself,
and-or heal, from their adverse affects.

First, let me explain what an inflammatory food actually is – it’s
when you consume a food and your body begins to attack that food and make
antibodies. The antibodies then create inflammation to help centralize the
area being affected by the foreign invaders and to help heal the area.
Inflammation is a natural outcome of an immune response in the body. However,
inflammation gone unchecked, such as in food sensitivities, can cause long
term symptoms and health problems
like asthma, heart disease,
chronic headaches, digestive problems, pain and much
more. Read More

Why Dieting Sucks- Some Nutrition Coaching Insights

why dieting sucks

Yes, dieting sucks for most
people. And that is a serious problem. Why? Because we all need a diet in
order to live, thrive, heal and reach our best health and wellness potential.
Wait, did I just say everyone needs to be on a diet? Well, in a sense, yes!
The Miriam
Webster definition
of the word
diet is “1 : food and
drink regularly provided or consumed. 2 : habitual nourishment.” In
other words, dieting is simply our preferred manner of eating. But when we
typically think of “dieting,” we only think of a short term,
fragmented fix to try and change something we don’t like about our bodies. This
leads to an underwhelming experience or ultimate failure for most people who
try.

Dieting sucks
because you may be missing key points and going about it all
wrong.

Nutritional Supplements- Get Informed and Make Good Choices

Nutritional-Supplements

Winter is approaching, the
holidays are here, and many of us are thinking about whether or not we should
be adding any nutritional supplements to our diets in order to strengthen our
immune systems, manage stress, and curtail the winter season flu. The multi-billion-dollar
nutritional supplement industry
is counting on it! But the truth
is, many people have no idea whether their bodies truly need the supplements
they are buying. Nor do they know whether the supplements they buy are
actually working for their bodies they way they should be.

I have broken down some basics about nutritional supplements, to
make it very easy to decide when you may want to consider supplementing, and
how to understand your supplement labels, so you can decide if the
supplements you are choosing are the best fit for your needs.

Here are Some
Possible Reasons to Use Nutritional
Supplements:

Health Benefits of Alcohol, A “Healthy” Perspective

health-benefits-of-alcohol

The health benefits of
alcohol
is a popular subject. News features, blogs, and
social media posts touting alcohol’s benefits are ubiquitous. Every time
I see a friend on Facebook sharing an article about how good red wine is for
you, it is all I can do to resist being the contrarian know-it-all and making
a comment.

In her groundbreaking book on alcohol addiction, This
Naked Mind
, author Annie Grace explains how writers need
readership. So they write about popular subjects. People want to read that
alcohol is good for them, so they read articles about that. That makes sense.
But if you look at the stats, something interesting is revealed. There are
only a handful of scholarly studies on the health benefits of alcohol, yet
there are many, many people reading articles on those studies. On the other
hand, there are many, many scholarly studies on the health risks of alcohol,
multiple times more than those on the benefits, but only a handful of people
want to read articles on those studies.

So I thought I would try something fun that everyone can read and
relate to. I found some common health claims in favor of alcohol consumption.
I am going to list them here. Read More
